Protein Modeling at the Science Olympiad

Protein Modeling is an event at the Science Olympiad, originally developed by the MSOE Center for BioMolecular Modeling, now run in collaboration with the RCSB Protein Data Bank.

This event challenges students to explore protein structure and function by creating 3-dimensional models of proteins based on the coordinates from the Protein Data Bank archive.

You can find a variety of information/tools here for succeeding in all levels of the Protein Modeling events, including:

  • Background information, instructions and details at the website developed by MSOE CBM
  • Learning materials and model building guides for the various levels of competition
  • Specific PDB entry identifiers to access the structural data from the RCSB PDB
  • Free, web-based viewer to practice the JSmol visualization environment for any PDB structure:
  • The RCSB PDB Molecule of the Month features relevant to the theme of the protein modeling targets
